RE: Movie Critics R Us

Crooked Hearts (1991)

After Tom Warren (Peter Berg) drops out of college and returns home, love, secrets and tragedy force him to come to terms with his dysfunctional family; his father Edward (Peter Coyote); mother Jill (Cindy Pickett); and siblings Charley (Vincent D'Onofrio); Ask (Noah Wiley); and Cassie (Juliette Lewis). The tension between Edward and Charley sparks most of the drama, and there is plenty of drama here. It does ultimately prove to be a bit much, and I did not find the rather corny conclusion to be convincing. I did not find Berg to be a great choice for the lead roll, as he did not come across as very engaging.

The Cutter (2005)

John Shepherd (Chuck Norris) is a police officer turned private investigator who finds himself embroiled in a conspiracy involving two mythical diamonds dating back to biblical times. Chuck is simply too old to still be playing the tough guy. The fight scenes here are pretty poor, and it is obvious that a stunt man was required for anything that demanded much physical exertion. The plot may be a cut above standard straight to DVD fare, but the action was mostly lacking.

Amnesia: The James Brighton Enigma (2005, partially subtitled)

Found naked in a parking lot in Montreal, American James Brighton (Dusan Dukic) cannot remember anything except that he is gay. A criminology student named Sylvie (Karyne Lemieux) tries to help James find out who he is. The story is an interesting one, but the film does not elicit much of an emotional response. Dukic comes across mostly as too reserved, and his degree of frustration is barely established as James mostly just appears to roll with the tide. The mystery is solved in short order, but even then he remains on cruise control. It all amounts to a rather dull experience.

Babylon A.D. (2008)

Toorop (Vin Diesel), a ruthless mercenary, is hired to smuggle a mysterious young woman named Aurora (Melanie Thierry) from the post-apocalyptic confines of Eastern Europe to the glittering megalopolis of New York City. Attempting to understand this one may cause your head to explode. Diesel has always stricken me as a second tier action hero, and here he appears to be just going through the motions. Much of the action is too frenetic to enjoy, and while a couple action scenes look fantastic, they are just as ridiculous in their plausibility. I cannot see the ending here satisfying anyone who makes it through that far.

Four Eyed Monsters (2005)

Susan (Susan Buice) and Arin (Arin Crumley) meet on-line and end up dating but with a rule to never speak in person. This is based on the real relationship between to two creators/actors, so it is kind of an experiment in filmmaking and a piece of art-part reenactment, part staged drama. For an indie film, it is quite well done, with interesting gimmicks, and various forms of artistry being utilized. Fresh and inventive and worth a look if you are up for something out of the ordinary.

Meet The Browns (2008)

A single mother living in inner city Chicago, Brenda (Angela Bassett) has been struggling for years to make ends meet and keep her three kids, Michael (Lance Gross), Tosha (Chloe Bailey), and Lena (Mariana Tolbert), off the street. When she is laid off with no warning, she starts losing hope for the first time until a letter arrives announcing the death of a father she has never met. Desperate for any kind of help, Brenda takes her family to Georgia for the funeral. There, Brenda tries to get to know the family she never knew existed and finds a brand new romance with Harry (Rick Fox) that just might change her life. This sounded familiar to me, and sure enough, I have also had the misfortune of witnessing the 2004 version. Perry cannot decide if this is a comedy or a drama, and the two extremes clash. The clownish characters of Vera (Jenifer Lewis) and Leroy Brown (David Mann) are grating, with the exclusively Mann outtakes being especially unfunny. The cameo inclusion of Perry as Uncle Joe/Madea is pointless. Perry bombs once more, and Bassett deserves a better platform for her talents.

Acts Of Imagination (2006)

In an effort to cope with the death of their mother, Jaroslaw (Billy Marchenski) and Katya (Stephanie Hayes) emigrate to Vancouver from the Ukraine. The dialogue comes across as well written and authentic, and the characters are complex and very well drawn up, however this small film is likely to be received well by a limited audience of serious film afficionados.

Balls Out: Gary The Tennis Coach (2009)

Kicked off the pro-circuit, down-on-his-luck tennis pro Gary (Seann William Scott) leaves tennis and takes a job as a janitor at a high school, but given the opportunity he leaps at the opportunity to coach the school's losing tennis team. My sense of humour skews towards twisted at times, but I fail to understand the intention of whoever is responsible for this. There is no explanation for the inappropriate behaviour of Gary, and it is more disturbing and uncomfortable to watch than funny. It tries too hard for laughs, mostly failing miserably, and there is little rhyme or reason for most of it. Given the right vehicle, Scott can be obnoxiously funny. This is not it.

The New Twenty (2009)

Andrew (Ryan Locke), his fiancée Julie (Nicole Bilderback), her brother Tony (Andrew Wei Lin), Ben (Colin Fickes) and Felix (Thomas Sadoski) are a group of friends who were close in college, but are now struggling to come to terms with their ambitions, successes and failures as they approach the milestone of their thirtieth birthdays. I did not care for most of these characters, their lives, or their conversations. There have been many similar movies before, and this one does not bring much new to the table, with most events unfolding in predictable fashion.

Crazy For Love (2005)

On his 21st birthday Max (David Krumholtz) tries to hang himself. It is his eighth suicide attempt. Sent back to an asylum, Max falls in love at first sight with Grace (Natasha Lyonne), who is also suicidal. For the most part, this film shoots its wad in the promising opening scene. It looks like it may be a dark, clever comedy, only in actuality, it goes downhill from there. Not that it is terrible. It just slips into cruise control, becoming a quirky, unconventional love story, with nothing standing out as being particularly funny.

Devour (2005)

While playing an online computer game called The Pathway, the violent visions of Jake Gray (Jensen Ackles) are brought to life as the game begins to transform his terrifying daydreams into gruesome reality for Jake and his friends. The lame premise and transpiring series of events is justified by a surprise twist in the end, but then you will figure out you were just cheated for ninety minutes.

Queen Sized (2008)

The popular girls in school have something devious in mind when they nominate overweight girl Maggie Baker (Nikki Blonsky) to run for Homecoming Queen as a joke against Tara (Kimberly Matula). This is much better than the usual Lifetime movies. I think they provided a realistic example of someone struggling with self-esteem issues as well as her addictions. She was not without flaws, and the other characters were not all typical stereotypes either. The subject matter is poignant, and everyone should be able to relate to it to some degree.

Mrs. 'Arris Goes To Paris (1992)

Ada Harris (Angela Lansbury) decides to save all her money to purchase an original Dior dress. Upon arriving in Paris, many obstacles and characters stand in her way from reaching her desired attire. Another made for television movie, this breezy, affable production calls for a little suspension of disbelief, but it is a fun story to watch as the staff of the esteemed dress designer rally to try to please their new foreign friend, as she intern weaves a bit of magic in returning the favour. This one is fit for family viewing.

From Noon Till Three (1976)

On his way to rob a bank, Graham Dorsey (Charles Bronson) has a brief love affair with lonely young widow Amanda (Jill Ireland). Amanda later hires a ghost writer and capitalizes on her liaison by stretching the truth and creating a legend out of Dorsey, who discovers that his identity no longer belongs to himself. This wonky tale is stifled by poor acting. Ireland is wooden, and Bronson is not suited for comedy. This one skips abruptly from one moment in time to the next with no transition in between, and likely needed more development. In better hands, this material might work, but I sure was not impressed.

Jimmy & Judy (2006)

Jimmy Wright (Edward Furlong) and Judy (Rachael Bella) are misunderstood suburban teens who challenge society and run from the police while documenting all of their deeds with a digital camera. We see everything from the perspective of the handheld camera of Jimmy. Some may find that vantage point off-putting, but I rather enjoyed the time with this psychotic pair. Jimmy sure was disturbing, but there were some funny bits regarding his home life, and he was far from a stupid person, and the relationship and ensuing spree unfolded in a convincing fashion.

A Couple Of Days And Nights (2005)

Rhonda (Shonda Farr), Scott (Joseph Peracchio), Micah (David Lago) and Jula Diva (Erika Amato) are four artistically inclined people who struggle to find love and professional satisfaction in Los Angeles. The Micah and Jula characters were incredibly shallow, while Rhonda and Scott grounded and balanced. Perhaps a more serious film focused on the latter two may have worked, but as is, this is a pretty lame comedy with some pretty poor acting.

A Broken Life (2008)

Max (Tom Sizemore) loathes his own mediocrity, so he decides to commit suicide and recruits his friend Bud (Corey Sevier) to film his last day. Angry and determined, he seeks to exact revenge on his boss (Saul Rubinek) and ex-wife Melinda (Grace Kosaka). The kindness of a young woman gives Max hope just moments before his own end. This one pretty well annoyed the hell out of me with its contrivances and stilted dialogue.

Bottle Shock (2008)

A winery operated by Jim Barrett (Bill Pullman) and his son Bo (Chris Pine) receives unexpected publicity when their chardonnay is entered into the first blind taste-testing of wines from France and California by snobbish Brit named Steven Spurrier (Alan Rickman), launching the Napa Valley winemakers on the world. Based on a true event, but I imagine extreme liberties were taken in serving up this version, which although it is a good yarn, many situations defy belief. It falls short of Sideways, but the landscapes look great, and Rickman is fun to watch as usual. The love story between hippy Pine and the rail thin Rachael Taylor, not so much, and the Jim Barrett character was too abrasive to warm up to. But this is one of those underdog tales mainstream audience love to eat up.

Swamp Devil (2008)

Howard Blaime (Bruce Dern) is an ex-sheriff accused of rape and murder in a small town. No one believes his stories of the true killer, the Swamp Devil. Now to clear his name, Howard must prove that the Swamp Devil exists. He must also protect his estranged daughter Melanie (Cindy Sampson), who has been lured to town under false pretences. This low budget horror lacks punch. The CGI effects were adequate given the budget, but the creature stalking prey in broad daylight will not go down in the annals of history as one of the most feared monsters.

Love And Other Disasters (2006)

A free spirited American woman named Emily 'Jacks' Jackson (Brittany Murphy) works as an assistant at British Vogue and off the clock loves setting up her friends, but she has been unlucky at love herself. She tries to fix her gay roommate Peter Simon (Matthew Rhys) up with her handsome new photographer assistant Paolo Sarmiento (Santiago Cabrera), only with unexpected consequences. This is a bold romantic comedy that dares draw parallels to Breakfast At Tiffany's and in tongue in cheek fashion, poke fun at movie cliches even as it is as guilty as anyone of serving them up. While Murphy is not Audrey Hepburn, she is nonetheless sexy and adorable here. The story is unoriginal and predictable, but thanks to Murphy, a fun romp.

The Chair (2007)

Danielle Velayo (Alanna Chisholm) is a psychology student who suffers a nervous breakdown and goes to convalesce at an aging Victorian home that houses an evil spirit only she can sense. This one is pretty effective as a pretty unnerving psychological horror thriller. Chisholm does strut around a lot scantily clad an awful lot, but then again, a lot of women do when alone. The budget is low, but it mostly occurs in one location, so it does not suffer for it, making good use of what was available. Better than your standard horror.

Ghost Voyage (2008)

Michael (Antonio Sabato, Jr.), Serena (Deanna Russo), Nicholai (Nicholas Irons), Jessica (Julian Berlin), Simon (Adrian Neil), Raymond (P.J. Marino), Ronnie (James Patric Moran), and Andrew (Hristo Mitzkov) mysteriously awaken on board a haunted vessel. This is yet another poorly conceived Sci-Fi channel bomb. Poor dialogue, mediocre acting, awful effects, and a story with a predictable twist.

Before The Rains (2007)

Henry Moores (Linus Roache) is an Englishman planning to base a spice plantation in Southern India, who enlists the help of the local people, but puts his servant T.K. Neelan (Rahul Bose) into an impossible position when he becomes romantic with his maid, Sajani (Nandita Das), who happens to be the sister of T.K. This is a beautiful looking film with great looking locations, and a fine addition to the Merchant Ivory stable of films. The tragedy is a compelling one, deeply affecting the lives of many characters. And Bose stands out in a fine, if unrecognizable cast.

The River Wild (1994)

Gail Hartman (Meryl Streep) is a talented river guide who is forced to put her skills to use when her husband Tom (David Strathairn) is wounded and stranded while she takes two criminals, Wade (Kevin Bacon) and Terry (John C. Reilly), down a dangerous river against her will. This one is a fun thriller with a savvy Streep matching wits against a wolf in sheep's clothing in Bacon. There is ample suspense and a good bit of cat and mouse going on, and it adds up to a good experience thanks to the quality actors on board.

Burn After Reading (2008)

While CIA agent Osbourne Cox (John Malkovich) is in the process of writing a book, he loses the disc containing his manuscript, which is recovered by a bumbling pair of personal trainers, Chad Feldheimer (Brad Pitt) and Linda Litzke (Frances McDormand), who think they are in possession of valuable state secrets. While by no means is this the best movie the Coen brothers have made, it is certainly a worthy addition to their anthology. With a cast that includes George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, Richard Jenkins and J.K. Simmons, there is plenty of star power to play the quirky characters on hand in a biting and dark comedy. Just embrace it for its cynicism, its wit and its oddball nature.

The Duchess (2008)

Georgiana (Keira Knightley) is a beautiful and forward thinking woman who becomes the toast of British society when she marries the Duke of Devonshire (Ralph Fiennes), but soon discovers his cold and controlling manner is utterly oppressive. The lavish sets and fine costumes, plus another good period piece performance by Knightley as a strong character trying to cope in a society that accepts double standards as the norm, help elevate this film to something many observers might dismiss as melodrama, but it is more than that.

Kit Kittredge: An American Girl (2008)

This is the inspirational story of nine-year-old Margaret Mildred 'Kit' Kittredge (Abigail Breslin) growing up in the Great Depression while solving a mystery that helps save her home. Director Patricia Rozema has crafted a fine looking film that entire families can enjoy, but it is a bit too simplistic, corny and hammy for purely adult audiences. Breslin is her usual adorable self, having the torch passed to her by Dakota Fanning for exceptional child talent. The film promotes good family values and has endless optimism in human nature, with Kit proving to be a stellar role model young children can embrace.

Seance (2006)

In an attempt to rid their dorm of the ghost of a little girl, a group of college students, Lauren (Kandis Erickson), Melina (Tori White), and Alison (Chauntal Lewis) and Diego (A.J. Lamas), inadvertently bring back the killer, with horrifying results. The ghosts looked entirely too human and were not creepy at all, and the story made little sense. I must have missed why the students could not escape from the dorm, but surely there were ways.

Miracle At St. Anna (2008)

When quiet postal worker Hector Negron (Laz Alonso) unexpectedly shoots a customer dead, the subsequent investigation turns up the head of a priceless statue in his apartment, and a subsequent interview by zealous reporter Tim Boyle (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) reveals a strange story. Director Spike Lee offers a tribute to Buffalo Soldiers while railing against racial prejudice in the military in this overlong fictional account. But it is a remarkable journey, and Lee displays a knack for producing war epics, and despite the unevenness of the film and its excessive length, he deserves praise for its ambition and its humanity. It is a very affecting movie.

Bella (2006)

The career of soccer star José (Eduardo Verastegui) comes to an abrupt end, but his fall from the limelight puts him in the path of a beautiful waitress named Nina (Tammy Blanchard), and both of them come to understand that sometimes you must lose it all to appreciate what matters. Tender, bittersweet, and heartfelt, this is a touching story with well-defined characters. It also provides a thoughtful examination of the abortion debate, and I rather liked its life affirming stance and positive outlook.

The Derby Stallion (2005)

Patrick McCardle (Zac Efron) is a young man who defies the desire of his father to make him a baseball star, and instead spends his time with Houston Jones (Bill Cobbs), an alcoholic horse trainer who agrees to train him for the biggest steeplechase horse race of the season. Formulaic, cliche-riddled, and poorly directed. Suitable for family viewing, but there are much better options.

Religulous (2008, documentary)

This documentary follows political humorist Bill Maher as he travels around the globe interviewing people about God and religion. Maher is not as smug and condescending as I anticipated, and he actually showed some restraint when opportunity arose to belittle people. The end result is an often funny and thought provoking rebuttal to many of the beliefs adhered to by organized religions. Whether or not you agree with his political opinions, people can enjoy this if they are able to put that aside for a couple hours. Of course his agenda is very clear, and the majority of his interview subjects are anything but religious scholars, but then again, no one is really tuning in for serious debate when it comes to Maher, so here you get pretty much what he does best-stir the pot.

Pineapple Express (2008)

Dale Denton (Seth Rogen) is a pot smoking process server who contemplates the importance of friends and family while he and his dealer Saul Silver (James Franco) run from a vicious gang of drug-runners. Judd Apatow and Rogan have made better comedies, but their fans will probably still enjoy this one for the most part. Danny McBride adds quite a few laughs as Red, and there are funny moments, but the film is inconsistent, tapering off for stretches, losing its way as it digresses into more of an action flick than a stoner comedy.

Wisegal (2008)

Patty Montanari (Alyssa Milano), widowed at a young age, takes a page from the neighbourhood Mafioso and turns to selling contraband cigarettes to support her three sons. Patty then begins a romance with mobster Frank Russo (Jason Gedrick), who recognizes her business savvy and gives her a nightclub to manage. This Lifetime television movie is about as tame a mob movie as you will ever see, but really, there is really no reason to do so unless you are a diehard Milano fan. Caan is wasted by not being given the opportunity to cut loose, and the paper thin story will not keep anyone on the edge of their seat. And why the children of Patty looked like hobbits is anyone's guess.

What Just Happened? (2008)

Ben (Robert De Niro) is a Hollywood producer who finds his big comeback film starring Sean Penn derailed by a disastrous test screening, and struggles to mediate between cut-happy studio head Lou (Catherine Keener) and drug-addicted director Jeremy (Michael Wincott), while simultaneously juggling marital woes and meddling agents. Director Barry Levinson is blessed with a gifted cast in this cynical satire skewering Tinseltown and its players. Bruce Willis is notably funny for playing himself in a true diva episode. Wincott is terrific in a plum role, and John Torturro, Robin Wright Penn, Stanley Tucci and Kristen Stewart lend their talents, adding to the appeal. The main problem is that it is too smart for its own good. It may be too much of a movie for anyone who is not an insider to truly appreciate.

The Walker (2007)

Socialite Lynn Lockner (Kristin Scott Thomas) tests the loyalty of her gay friend Carter Page III (Woody Harrelson) when she finds herself in a scandal that could destroy her reputation, and the career of her husband Larry (Willem Dafoe). Covering for her, Carter suppresses evidence, only to find himself the suspect in a criminal investigation. This one was too pedestrian and underdeveloped to be a first rate political thriller, but it does have enough components to be engrossing. Harrelson is not bad in a role unlike any other I have seen him in, and Scott Thomas can always be counted on to put on a good show. The villains remain essentially anonymous for the most part, but the foundation is solid and the dialogue decent courtesy of Paul Schrader, who also directed.

White Noise 2: The Light (2007)

After his family is killed and he is brought back from the verge of death, Abe Dale (Nathan Fillion) realizes he can identify people who are about to die. Much better than I expected, with a pretty interesting concept, only to suffer from a few instances that seemed pure cliche or suffering from lazy execution in favour of sheer effect. Still, fans of all things supernatural and horror fans should enjoy the experience if they are willing to overlook some obvious flaws. Better than the Michael Keaton original, and its own entity altogether.

Nick And Nora's Infinite Playlist (2007)

Nick (Michael Cera) pines for Tris (Alexis Dziena), who dumped him on his birthday, but his life takes a turn for the better when he meets Norah (Kat Dennings), whose request that he be her boyfriend for five minutes develops into a night-long city-wide adventure. Sweet, charming, and benefiting from a good soundtrack, the central characters are the highlight, but as far as the comedy goes, this is rather a middling affair. Cera has his future secured with his deadpan nice guy persona, but he needs better material to truly shine.

Supernova (2000)

When a deep space hospital ship comes to the aid of another ship in distress, Nick Vanzant (James Spader), Dr. Kaela Evers (Angela Bassett), A. J. Marley (Robert Forster), Yerzy Penalosa (Lou Diamond Phillips), Danika Lund (Robin Tunney) and Benji Sotomajol (Wilson Cruz) find themselves in danger from Karl Larson (Peter Facinelli), the one man they rescue. This is a pretty solid science fiction film that is far better than its reputation. In a genre rife with disappointing entries, you can do much worse than this one. The story may not exactly be rocket science, but Star Trek was not either. The cast is full of recognizable names, with Facinelli standing out in the role of a villain.

The Sun (2005, subtitled)

The final days of Emperor Hirohito (Issey Ogata) rule in Japan during the dying days of WWII are chronicled. Only patient movie buff need subject themselves to this one, or those with a keen interest in the subject, for the pace is ploddingly deliberate. But it is a fascinating portrayal of the intelligent, yet aloof and deluded Hirohito. Ogata deserves praise for his work here. I also liked the sepia tinged quality of the picture which proved effective in setting the desired mood. Some may be angry that the film almost humanizes a monster, but that is not quite how I viewed it. The man knew full well what he was doing, and history holds him accountable.

Mutant Chronicles (2008)

In the year 2707, Brother Samuel (Ron Perlman) recruits Major Mitch Hunter (Thomas Jane), Bauhaus Lieutenant Maximillian von Steiner (Benno Furmann), Severian (Anna Walton), Corporal Valerie Duval (Devon Aoki), Corporal Juba Kim Wu (Tom Wu), Captain John McGuire (Steve Toussaint) and Corporal Jesus 'El Jesus' de Barrera (Luis Echegaray), who must team forces as together they become the last hope of Earth against evil mutants. This one is bookended by some fairly entertaining action sequences, but the long middle stretch is mostly lacking, dull and rife with overwrought dialogue. The CGI splattered blood will not fool anyone, nor will the effort put in by the actors, who seem to be operating on cruise control.

Beautiful Dreamer (2006)

Claire (Brooke Langton) and Joe Kelly (Colin Egglesfield), childhood sweethearts and newlyweds, are torn apart when Joe is shot down in WWII and listed as MIA. I have a weakness for Langton, but here she is stuck in a romance saga which is totally devoid of sparks, and about on par with your typical television movie of the week.

Under The Same Moon (2007, subtitled)

Even across thousands of miles, the special bond between a mother and son can never be broken. It gives hope to Carlitos (Adrian Alonso), a scrappy nine year old boy whose mother Rosario (Kate del Castillo) has gone to America to build a better life for both of them. While Rosario struggles for a brighter future, fate forces his hand and he embarks on an extraordinary journey to find her. This endearing feature attaches humanity to the immigration dilemma, but whatever your views on the issue, this is a touching, heartwarming story that will put a smile on your face, in no small part due to the charm of Alonso.

The Go-Getter (2007)

Mercer (Lou Taylor Pucci) steals a car to escape his small Oregon town and find his older brother after a tragic loss in the family. Once on the road he becomes attached to phone calls from Kate (Zooey Deschanel), the forgiving and mysterious girl who owns the car he stole. Any film Deschannel is in is better because of it. This one is no exception. Still, the disjointed dialogue does not ring authentic, and the feeling I sense is it was trying too hard to be a hip road trip movie, thus failing to forge its own unique identity.

Let The Right One In (2008, subtitled)

Oskar (Kare Hedebrant), a bullied 12-year-old boy, finds friendship and love with Eli (Lina Leandersson), a mysterious girl whose arrival in town suspiciously coincides with a string of murders. Part unconventional love story, part horror, part drama...forget classification, this is a fine movie. Period. Never mind True Blood and give me more vampire films like this, even if they are from Sweden. Do not let the subtitles dissuade you, or you will be missing out.

The Women (2008)

When the husband of wealthy socialite Mary Haines (Meg Ryan) betrays her with Crystal Allen (Eva Mendes), a perfume girl from Saks, Sylvia Fowler (Annette Bening) and the rest of her friends erupt in a wave of gossip, at times supportive, at times unkind. The gimmick to have a film set in a New York City devoid of men was simply an ill-conceived one. And focusing their venom on Allen rather than the husband, so easily leaving him unaccountable for his culpability is ridiculous. Reduced to gimmick, a fantastic cast is wasted in a tide of breezy bullshit. If the purpose here is to celebrate the empowerment of women, it completely misses the mark.

LOL (2006)

Alex (Kevin Bewersdorf), Tim (Joe Swanberg), and Chris (C. Mason Wells) view the women in their lives through the dimensions of a computer screen or the lens of a camera-phone, as they struggle to balance their on-line fantasies and addictions to technology with the demands of real life. I suppose there is a lot of honesty depicted here showing how the reliance on modern gadgets has helped turn many people into emotionally bankrupt social misfits. The three stars are regular guys, not actors, and this is their collaborative experimental project. As an Art house film, this is refreshing stuff, but those who prefer structured, more mainstream fare will want to steer clear. I respect the ambition and originality on display, but this was far from LOL funny.

Faro: Goddess Of The Water (2007, subtitled)

Zanga (Fily Traore) returns to the village of his birth to uncover the identity of his father and initiate a waterworks project. However, his arrival coincides with the drowning of a young villager, alerting the village elders, who confer and determine that Faro, the spirit who rules the waters has been angered by the return of Zanga and the only way to appease her anger is with a sacrifice.

I Love A Man In Uniform (1993)

Ghost Town (2008)

A self-involved dentist, Dr. Bertram Pincus (Gervais), has a near-death experience during a routine procedure and upon recovering finds himself with the annoying ability to see ghosts, all of whom want something from him. Frank (Greg Kinnear) is the most persistent ghost, badgering Pincus to help keep his widow, Gwen (Tea Leoni), from making a big mistake.
